Field's transatlantic telegraph cable created a faster way to communicate across the Atlantic Ocean than ever before. Before the cable, people communicated across the Atlantic Ocean by boat, which was unpredictable and slow. The cable cut communication time from fourteen days to one. Now, fiber optic cables allow us to communicate over that same distance in under one second, and form the backbone of global communication. The laying of the transatlantic telegraph cable improved worldwide communication and  changed the history of communication forever.
