When Cyrus West Field began his work in the mid-1800s to connect Europe and America, it typically took sixteen days to send a message by boat. With the completion of the first successful cable, communication time decreased to less than fourteen hours. After several failures and restorations, the cable became the forerunner to the fiber optic cables we use today, revolutionizing how we communicate. Messages today travel at the speed of light. The transatlantic cable formed the backbone of global communication, and changed our world forever.
